Goth: What Is It?

Thursday, January 31st, 2008

By Rebecca Fairbanks Weve all heard the term goth, but do we really know what it means? Originally, the word Goth described a Germanic tribe which invaded Rome. The Goths were regarded as barbaric and uncultured. The term was later applied to a style of medieval architecture, Gothic architecture, because some critics believed that the designs were uncultured. There is even a body of literature, the works of Edgar Allen Poe, for example, that might be termed Gothic. The more recent goth movement was a subclass of punk rock, which emerged as an alternative subculture in the 1980s. The term goth was first applied to music in 1979. Fans were called Goths or Gothic Punks. Goth is a style of music and fashion. Goths tend to dye their hair black, and wear black clothing. Clothing might be ripped. Some goths wear lots of fishnet. Others wear lots of crushed velvet and lace, very Victorian. Jewelry is usually silver. Very white faces with plenty of black eyeliner are seen on both women and men. Sometimes a bit or red or purple might be worn too. Goth is a mode of self expression and creativity. Goths tend to be quiet, intelligent, creative people who focus on things dark and brooding, and especially the darker side of human nature.Imagination and originality are key. Not all goths are depressed. Not all goths wear black. All goths dont even necessarily enjoy goth music. Most do not like to label themselves as goth at all. Though the original Goth movement has faded out almost completely now, there is a new group of young goths, which are sometimes called KinderGoth or New School. Dating’s Largest Online Service

Monday, January 28th, 2008

By Sean Cash Hello all, As you probably already are aware of by now, lot of people are beginning to turn to their computers in an effort to find a mate online. In today’s information age their are a lot of great places to begin including those dating sites made by Yahoo, True, Match, and others. But do you know the very one place that is the dating’s largest online service? You probably do, but I seriously doubt you think of it as a dating site, yet it is one and it’s the largest of them all. And it’s free to boot. What is this site you may ask? Its good old Myspace.com. Now, I hear the groans from the older crowd (no offense!) who think Myspace is simply for their teenage sons and daughters. This was the case a few years ago, maybe in 2004, but things have changed drastically. Today Myspace is being populated by the over thirty singles crowd in record numbers. There isn’t realistically a website near as popular as Myspace in general, and certainly not an online dating site larger. The over thirty singles crowd have been checking out Myspace in droves lately to see “what all the fuss is about”, and with good reason. Myspace gives you instant access to find, contact, and connect with people in your area quicker than other dating sites. Most of them make you pay for the upgrades Myspace has readily available free as well. So If you’ve been looking for dating’s largest online service, look no futher than Myspace. Like many of others you’ve probably been thinking about it and tipping along the pool anyways. What are you waiting for? Go ahead and dive in! I Can’t Pay My Loan - Student Guidelines for Recovery

Sunday, January 27th, 2008

By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=Jay_Moncliff]Jay Moncliff You graduated and now your student loan is due. The job hasnt come through yet, or you are just in over your head. What can you do about that student loan? Before you enter the default stage, relax and review your options. Realize that you arent alone. Unfortunately, since so many former students default on their loans each year, the Department of Education has a well-oiled process of collecting payments from those who default. If you just stop paying, or never begin making payments when they are due, you can expect the Department of Education to take action to collect your student loan. There are several drawbacks to procrastinating. First, they will add substantial collection fees to your outstanding balance. You owe enough already, but they are going to want extra to track you down and force you to pay. The IRS works closely with the Department of Education, and theyll take any tax refund that you might be due. Thats right, theyll turn it over to the Department of Education without a second thought. Finally, once you do get a job, they can garnish your wages. Not only will they get the collection fees and hit your take home pay, but your employer will know you defaulted on your loans as well. If you default, your credit will be damaged. This will prevent you from getting the best available financing deals, a mortgage and possibly even a job. Want to avoid all that hassle? First, realize that you do have options. Shirking your responsibilities should be the last option. Contact an Ombudsman at the Department of Education (877-577-2575). Review your options and choose one that you can live with. You may be able to defer your loans. This program allows you to defer, or put off, payments on principal, interest or both under some conditions. If youre out of work but looking for a job, experiencing a financial hardship or going back to school you may be able to put off paying for awhile. You must apply and be approved, so be proactive and request the paperwork from your lender before you find yourself in default. Most loans have a provision for cancellation. However, canceling a student loan is very difficult. If you meet one of the requirements you can apply for a cancellation by completing a form provided by your lender. Some of the qualifications include total disability, either permanent or temporary, death, providing instruction or other services to needy populations or entering a rehabilitation program for your disability. Serving in one of the armed forces may also allow you to cancel your student loans under certain circumstances. Cancellations are hard to obtain and will always require documentation of your condition or situation. If you find yourself in extreme circumstances, student loans can be discharged through certain types of bankruptcy. However, you must be able to prove that if you repaid the loan you would suffer severe financial difficulty, and most student loans can only be discharged through Chapter 13 bankruptcies in which you must repay a portion of your debt (usually pennies on the dollar). Whatever your situation, deal with your student loan problem before it enters default. Whatever choice you make, dont ignore the problem. It wont go away, itll only get bigger. Tips for Realistically Losing Weight

Saturday, January 26th, 2008

By Zach Thompson Obesity is a life threatening condition and is spreading at an alarming rate throughout Western society. It is particularly prevalent in the USA. However there are some steps you can take to reduce your weight and improve your health and lifestyle. Reducing calorie intake: What are calories? A calorie is a unit used to measure energy. It is required by most governments to print the calorie value of foods on the nutrition label of all foods that are sold to consumers. Because if this it is easier to calculate your calorie intake. Reducing calories means not just cutting food intake but being careful of the actual caloric value of the foods you are eating. Reduction but not eliminating fats and oils: fat and oil is necessary for the body but we often eat foods which are too high in fats thus taking in more fat and oil than we need to. When you cut down fat and oil you will reduce calories and definitely manage to lose those pounds. Decrease but do not eliminate carbohydrates: Carbohydrates are necessary to the body but we often eat too much of this class of food resulting in the body storing these foods as fat. When you cut down carbohydrates you will reduce your weight. Increase your protein levels: It is often good to eat foods that are high in proteins as they are not as fattening as other foods. High protein foods are good to eat when you are reducing weight to prevent any muscle loss occurring as you shed those pounds. Eat more fruits and vegetables: These are good for providing nutrients to the body and are low in calories. They are a good alternative to junk food snacks. They will also increase fiber in your diet. Reduction in sugar and sodium. Sugar is readily broken dawn by the body into energy and excess stored as fat making it a fattening food. Sodium eaten in excess can contribute to water retention by the body and prevent weight loss. Increasing fiber in your diet: this will help you to curb hunger pangs as fiber rich foods will help you feel full as they take longer to digest. Your digestive system will work better with an increase in fiber.Whole grain foods, unrefined foods, fruits and vegetables will give you more fiber. Increase your fluid intake: Drink more pure water especially. This will help to improve your health and fill you up. Increase exercise: Regular exercise will help you reduce weight and build muscle instead of storing fat. You can either work out for about 20 minutes 3 times a week or take a brisk daily walk. When you use these steps you will reduce your weight. You will not achieve a super figure in one day but when you keep up a healthy diet you will lose weight steadily. Maintaining a healthy diet with regular exercise will ensure that you not only reduce but will keep the weight off. You will feel healthier and have more energy to do the things you really want to do in life. Zach Thompson is a Glyconutrients Consultant. The Meaning of Life is … Vanilla Chocolate Chunk: a review of Ben & Jerry’s Scoop Shops

Friday, January 25th, 2008

By Lisa Koosis Have you ever tried Ben & Jerry’s Vanilla Chocolate Chunk ice cream? If you don’t have a Ben & Jerry’s Scoop Shop where you live, then your answer, I’m sorry to say, will most likely be no. If I can blame Ben and Jerry’s for one thing, it’s this… They get you addicted to a flavor, and you can’t get it anywhere else. How’s that for a marketing ploy? I stumbled onto a Scoop Shop while I was vacationing in Cape Cod. For better or for worse, the shop was about a two minute drive from the hotel where my husband and I were staying, so every night after the beach, we’d be more than ready for Ben & Jerry’s. As anyone who’s ever tried their packaged pints can tell you, Ben & Jerry’s has wonderful ice cream. Preservatives beware. This is the real stuff, as signs around the store proudly proclaim. The proof is, of course, in the taste. The quality of the ice cream is exceptional. It is perfectly textured — creamy, and smooth, and creamy. Oh, and did I mention that it’s very, very creamy? Their vanilla is probably the best tasting vanilla I’ve encountered in my extensive ice cream travels…and wait until you see the size of the chunks in their Vanilla Chocolate Chunk. What’s nice about Ben & Jerry’s is the variety of their flavors. Although I’m pretty much a vanilla and/or chocolate kind of gal, even I couldn’t resist reading all the descriptions of their flavors. They’re amazingly inventive, and worth a second glance, if not a taste. Even the names are one hundred percent original. Chubby Hubby. Phish Food. Chunky Monkey. Don’t forget the classic New York Super Fudge Chunk, and who could resist a flavor named after Jerry Garcia? There is even an ice cream with little chocolate cows in it. Now how’s that for originality? The point is that there’s something at Ben & Jerry’s for everyone. If you can’t find a flavor there that you like, then the quest is hopeless. For the health conscious, Ben & Jerry’s also offers low fat yogurts, some in many of the same flavors as the ice cream, and sorbets in luscious tropical fruit flavors. Why not pick a sorbet flavor and have it made into a smoothie? What better treat on a hot summer afternoon? But ice cream aside (as if that’s possible), the Scoop Shops are just plain old fun. The tables are plastered with information about the company, the flavors, and fun facts about Ben & Jerry’s. One wall had a timeline of the company’s “greatest moments”. Just the reading material kept me coming back, though I admit, I’m one of those people who’ll be happy to read the back of a cereal box if there’s nothing else around to fasten my eyes onto. The staff — at least at the Ben & Jerry’s we frequented — was great. They were friendly, efficient, and even went so far as to assure me that the sundae’s calories would all be negated if I went ahead and ordered that Diet Coke. Now that’s service. And what else can I say? The waffle cones are made fresh daily. The toppings are superb and varied — you can even get a cookie sundae. The hot fudge is smooth and hot, which is more than I can say for many an ice cream stand. And to top it off, they even had a no sugar added flavor each night, which was perfect for my husband, who can’t have refined sugars. You can even buy Ben & Jerry’s tee-shirts and mugs, though I personally, would rather shell out my money for ice cream. If that’s not enough, well then you might like to know what a community-friendly bunch that Ben & Jerry’s are. The company is big on giving back to the communities that make them money. Check out some of the pamphlets available at the scoop shop, or their web site. You can even subscribe to an electronic Ben & Jerry’s newsletter. There are only two negatives that I found. One is that some flavors are only available at the Scoop Shops and are not prepackaged in pints. Alas, such is the case with my beloved Vanilla Chocolate Chunk. I won’t be seeing it until vacation next year (though happily, Chocolate Fudge Brownie is available in my grocer’s freezer). The other negative is the price. Take out a second mortgage before you order that hot fudge sundae, because these prices are steep. For one waffle cone, and one small dish, my husband and I shelled out over six dollars. I do have to give them credit for one thing though. As steep as the prices may be, I can assure you — you’ll enjoy every penny’s worth. After all, I think I found the meaning of life — in an ice cream flavor. Lisa is an author on http://www.Writing.Com/ which is a site for Poetry Contests. Thursday, January 24th, 2008

By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=Peter_Taylor]Peter Taylor Life is a beautiful gift of god. Why to let it go like a waste just because you dont have enough funds to make it comfortable. Everybody has some personal needs which need to be satisfied. But everybody need not have required funds to provide for these needs. Here the concept of secured personal loans will help you get the best out of your life. Secured personal loans are backed up by your home or any other valuable property as collateral. These loans are multipurpose loans and can be used for any purpose. It can be for buying new property or home, getting a new car, funding your childrens education, opening a new business venture, for wedding purposes, holidaying around the world, debt consolidation or can be any other personal needs. Secured personal loans have following characteristics which make them preferable over other loans: Low interest rates help you cut down your monthly expenses on repayment installments. Longer repayment tenure results in small installments. You can mould your payments according to your capability to pay with flexible repayment options. Ideal for bad debtors, CCJs, IVAs, arrears, defaulters, bankrupts. Provision of online calculator helps you calculate how much you can get and what you have to pay afterwards. Reduced paper work and formalities as most of the job is done through internet. Faster and friendlier source of money as it takes 12-15 days for approval. Availability of numerous lenders makes these loans easy to obtain.A secured personal loan ranges from ₤30000 to ₤100000 and can also go up to ₤250000 in certain cases depending upon the status and requirement of the borrower. The repayment term lies between 5 to 25 years. You can also expand your repayment term if circumstances are forcing you to do that. There are lots of people facing the trouble of having a bad credit. Their past defaults in payment give rise to bad credit. People hesitate to go for a loan as lender look at there credit status before offering you his money as loan amount. But in case of secured personal loan no lender can deny you from taking the loan as the risk of the lender is secured. The only thing which is affected by your credit score is the interest rate and the effect is minimal. So, no need to worry much about it. Always spend some time looking for secured personal loans offered by different lenders to get the best deal in terms of interest rates and repayment terms and conditions. Reading People: Body Language Briefing

Tuesday, January 22nd, 2008

By Chris Coffman Body language is the meaning behind the words or theunspoken language. Surprisingly, studies show that onlyup to an estimated 10 percent of our communication isverbal. The majority of the rest of communication isunspoken. This unspoken language isnt rocket science. However, there are some generalizations or basicinterpretations that can be applied to help with theunderstanding or translating of these unspoken meanings. Here are some basics below. 1. Smile People like warm smiles. Think of a heartfelt warm-fussy, maybe your favorite pet, and smile. 2. Eyes If you dont look someone in the eyes while speaking, this can be interpreted as dishonesty or hiding something. Likewise, shifting eye movement or rapid changing of focus/direction can translate similarly. If more than one person is present in a group, look each person in the eye as you speak, slowly turning toface the next person and acknowledge him or her with eyecontact as well. Continue on so that each person has feltyour warm, trusting glance. Some suggest beginning with oneperson and moving clockwise around the group so that no oneis missed, and so that you are not darting around, seemingly glaring at people. 3. Attention Span / Attitude Other people can tell what type attitude you have by yourattention span. If you quickly lose focus of the otherperson and what is being said, and if your attention spanwanders, this shows through and makes you seemdisinterested, bored, possibly even uncaring. 4. Attention Direction If you sit or stand so that you are blockinganother in the party, say someone is behind you, this canbe interpreted as rude or thoughtless. So be sure to turnso that everyone is included in the conversation or angleof view, or turn gently, at ease and slowly, while talking,so that everyone is incorporated, recognized and involvedin the conversation. Again some suggest the clockwisemovement when working a group. 5. Arms Folded / Legs Crossed This can be seen as defensive or an end to theconversation. So have arms hang freely or hold a glass ofwater, a business card or note taking instruments whilecommunicating with others. Be open with open arms. Note: Ifyou need to cross legs, cross at your ankles and not yourknees. Sitting tightly folded up says that you are closedto communications. 6. Head Shaking If people are shaking their heads while you speak, they arein agreement. If they are shaking, no, disagreementreigns in their minds. 7. Space / Distance On the whole, people like their own personal body space. Give people room and keep out of their space. Entering to close can beintrusive and viewed as aggressive. Leaning Sitting orstanding, leaning is viewed as interest. In other words, aninterested listener leans toward the speaker. Note othersbody language While you are with others, note how theirbodies read. If a person suddenly folds his arms across hischest and begins shaking his head no, youve probablylost him. Might try taking a step back and picking up wherethe conversation began this turn for the negative andregroup. Its all about strategic planning! Learn how to meet and attract beautfiul women. Head to Toe-Dressing for Success for Your Pharmaceutical Sales Job Interview

Sunday, January 20th, 2008

By Ryan Stewart Pharmaceutical companies are known for their conservative business appearance. Many reps who’ve been around since the 1980’s will tell you that the dress code was once so strict, it was almost a uniform! Well, times have changed somewhat but the basics are the same. Ladies first - here’s what’s expected of you in an interview. Ladies * Conservative suit (pantsuit OK) black, navy, charcoal gray or similar in color. Pinstripes are acceptable. A white or light-colored conservative blouse is the most appropriate. * Take it easy on the makeup and hair. Think church, not date. * Nails should be well manicured and polished clear. Drug reps use their hands for demonstration and pointing all the time. A good interviewer will notice. * Stockings or none? It’s the great debate. If you can pull of a professional, conservative look without them . . . go for it. If not, or your not sure . . . play it safe and wear them. * Shoes should be medium to low heel (and you should be comfortable enough in them to walk normally). Many say closed toe is best. I say use common sense and if an open toe looks professional, you can pull it off. * Skip the perfume. Remember, it’s an interview not a date. You want the interviewer to remember you for what you said and how you carried yourself, not how good (or overpowering) you smelled. Gentlemen * 100% wool conservative navy, black, or charcoal gray suit. Again, pinstripes are acceptable. 100% cotton shirt with heavy starch will make you look like a million bucks. * Go for a tie that refuses to be dated. In other words, solid ties are always in. So are large alternating stripes in the deeper shades of primary colors. I’m a big fan of deep red ties for interviews (red is said to be a “power” color). * Shoes should be lace ups and they should be polished brighter than Forrest Gump’s. * Fingernails are important for you too. Clipped, clean, manicured, cuticles pushed back, buffed, and ready for action. * If you’ve had a beard or mustache for 20 years and know how to take care of it, then it’s probably OK to keep it. Otherwise, you should have a clean shave. You should have a fresh haircut too. * I don’t care if you paid $6,000 for that bottle of cologne, save it for the afterparty (the party after you get hired, that is). A few things should be able to go unsaid - but they can’t. * No chewing gum or candy. I know you want to have fresh breath. Take a bottle of mouthwash and rinse before you go inside.
